TIK-TOK: AN AGATHOKAKOLOGICAL

We all are witnessing the cold war between the YouTubers and Tik-Tok Creators. Therefore, this is the right time to talk about this platform, and thus the title is, “Tik-Tok an Agathokakological”. Let’s start from the beginning. For those who don’t get the meaning of the word “agathokakological”. The word Agathokakological simply means that something which contains both good and bad effects. Tik Tok, is a video sharing social networking service owned by Byte Dance, a Chinese company in 2012 by Zhang Yiming which now has over 800 million active users all over the globe. Tik Tok so far is one of the world’s most downloaded apps, having surpassed 1.5 billion downloads mark on the App Store and Goggle Play in a single year in 2019.

The company Byte Dance first launched an app by the name Douyin for the Chinese market in September 2016. Later in 2017, the company developed Android and iOS version of this app and launched it markets outside china. Both Tik Tok and Douyin are similar to each other, the only difference between them is that Douyin runs on a separate server to comply with the Chinese censorship restrictions.(For those who don’t know china doesn’t allow their population to use app which are developed outside china. They develop their own platforms which is only used by their public). Another similar app musical.ly was launched in the United States on August, 2 2018. This app is popular in Asia, U.S. as well as other parts of the world. The application allows its users to create short music or lip-sync videos for a maximum time limit of 1 minute. The users can also create short dance, comedy as well as talent videos on this app. This application uses Artificial Intelligence to know about the interest of their users and based upon that they get the content. The tik tok application mainly attracts the younger generation, and around 41% of the users are between the ages of 16 to 24. A data shows that 90% of the users use this app on a daily basis.

In an interview to the founder, it was asked that, ‘Why was this application created?’ His reply was that he founded this app for the unemployed people in China, so that they can utilize their time to entertain the people who work. He was also delighted on the thought of Indian people using this application, he was also shocked to see so many unemployed people using his app.

Talking about the application and its usage in India, it has a huge audience ranging from young people to famous celebrities. India is the largest user nation of Tik Tok after the United States. Thus, the influence which this application brings to the people of India is also very huge. The power of this platform is very high and many people can boost them up in a very short span of time. Many people’s votes are against this app and that the content in the application is cringe, and rubbish is not considered.

Due to some current scenario in India due to the YouTube vs Tik Tok fight, the matter has grown more hot and now people have started comparing both the platforms. Which is totally wrong. Now many people will disagree with me at this point, by saying that both the platforms have creators who show their creativity and talents. I agree with this context, but there is a difference, growing on YouTube is hard and requires enormous hard work and time whereas, in Tik Tok the growth rate is very high and its quite simple and easy. I have seen people on Tik Tok who have built up a huge number of audience and from this they have directed it to their YouTube channel or other website and platforms.

If you hungry for numbers, then surely Tik Tok is one platform which will provide you the audience numbers. In this World everyone wants to become famous with less pain and time, this application can help you to achieve in that case. But always remember that in this World there are only two types of people:

  • People who are famous, who are followed by the crowd and wants to become like them.

  • People who are famous but the crowd doesn’t want to be one of them.

So majority of the Tik Tok creators fall in the second category. There are many Tik Tok creators who are creating good content on it, getting likes for it and using it to create their audience on that platform. But the number of those type of creators is quite low. Being a Social Media Influencer is tough and it takes a lot of time and hard work to be at that position. Before Tik Tok came it was tough for people to build a career on YouTube and other platforms, but as soon as it hit the markets everything became easier.

There are many such videos which are not appropriate to the audience either it is Violent, Abusive, Seductive and Sexual content or promoting other social customs. This platform has a coercive power which people need to understand. Instead of making such type of videos that distorts the peace and harmony of the country, this platform can be used for productive purposes. On an average a Tik Tok user spends 52 minutes per day on the app. In past few week people of India have started a revolution to ban the platform. It was banned before also for a short span of time but the ban was lifted due to some reasons. There are some points that I would like to mention:

  • Tik Tok doesn’t have a proper documentation on which kind of videos can be posted. There are no restrictions, conditions on the type of videos. Because of which anyone can post any kind of video.

  • Tik Tok is a Chinese application. This is one of the major threat for the country, because Tik Tok has a user agreement that it can use your personal data whenever it wants any confidential and personal data, photos and videos can be taken easily.

  • Because of this the United States has started its investigation regarding it, because earlier also many Chinese companies have leaked personal details of people to the Chinese government and many other Chinese Organizations’.

  • There is no age restriction on this platform due to which the youngsters especially kids are attracted towards it.

  • The majority of people using this platform are not educated enough to see the difference between what is wrong and right.

  • Therefore, due to this many of people upload those content which can convey a negative result to the society.

A number of deaths have resulted due to competition and in order to complete certain challenges which are surfaced on mundane basis. And the graph of number of people getting themselves killed due to these challenges is still increasing. Nobody has the problem with this platform. Its just another way of social networking platform which can be used to showcase the talents which people are shy to show on stage; the only problem is that the kind of content which is posted on the platform. This platform also binds the younger generation which is absolutely not acceptable. The younger generation should try to push their genre in the field of study or anything that will help them. At the end I would only say that certain restrictions should be imposed on the application so that it does not cause harm to the minds and the harmony of the country. Seeing the condition through which the world is going right now we need some younger people to take the load of the country by inventing new technology or leading the nation towards a successful future.
